What is Nelson Refining Systems?
Nelson Refining Systems has been in business
since 1974. We recycle and refine silver bearing
films and materials, and aid users of those films to
meet the EPA guidelines in disposing of such
materials.
How is the film processed?
What are your practices regarding HIPAA regulations?
What is the use of a silver recovery cartridge?
A silver recovery cartridge is used to de-silver spent fixer to lower than the
EPA allowance of 5ppm. Using a silver recovery cartridge, the spent fixer no
longer has to be collected and is treated on site.
How does the silver recovery cartridge work?
The silver recovery cartridges work as ion exchange. Ion exchange is the
reversible exchange of ions between solid iron and silver in liquid. Ion
exchange has shown to be very effective, recovering as much as 98% of the
silver and achieving effluents with silver concentrations as low as 0.1 ppm.
How long will the cartridges last?
The cartridge life depends completely on the amount of fixer that is
discharged through the unit.
What if there are problems with my cartridge?
Call us immediately.
What is a fixer trickle tank?
Fixer trickle tanks are used to help treat spent fixer on site. A fixer trickle tank
is a way to allow large amounts of used fixer to drain slowly into a silver
recovery cartridge when a silver recovery cartridge has not been used
previously.
What is a co-mingle chamber?
It is one unit used to neutralize all chemicals before going down the drain.
How do I ship a used cartridge?
First drain all fixer from bucket, and rinse with clean water. Drain completely
and put rinse water into newly installed cartridge. Package securely in plastic
drip proof container and then in a box. As long as no fluid leaks from the
package you may ship it UPS, Fed Ex, or USPS. Under EPA guidelines the
used cartridges do not have to be classified as hazardous waste as long as
they are being sent for refining.
Do you supply containers for scrap film?
Yes. We will supply 55 gallon barrels for clinics and hospitals in select states.
How soon will the product be installed or picked up?
Typically within a week of order request.
What if I only have a small amount of film to recycle?
The scrap film can be shipped to us through any mail or freight carrier. We will
gladly assist in shipping arrangements.
In our processing, we use an environmentally safe proteolytic enzyme solution
bath to remove the silver from the film. The plastic base for the film is used in
the plastic recycling industry. Once the silver emulsion is removed from the
plastic base, there are no markings or identifying characteristics on the plastic.
